On November 3, Long March 5, the carrier rocket with the largest thrust in the Long March series, blasted off from the Wenchang Space Launch Centeron and completed her perfect first flight. The project Aerodynamic Design of Booster 120t LOX/kerosene Rocket Engine Turbine undertook by Academician Wang Zhongqi and Professor Feng Guotai at the Research Institute for Gas Dynamics of Engine of the school made undeniable contributions to the breaking of 1000 tons of Long March 5 total thrust.
The engines used by Long March 5 include first-degree core, second-degree core, booster, and auxiliary power system to jointly assume power security tasks of all aspects of flight tests. The total thrust provided reached 1,078 tons including eight 120t LOX/kerosene rocket engines. Academician Wang’s team undertook the task of booster engine turbine design, and conducted aerodynamic design of booster 120t LOX/kerosene rocket engine turbine. With bowed blade technique and synthesized optimizing flow pattern design methods, based on turbine aerodynamic design system self-developed by the Research Institute for Gas Dynamics of Engine of HIT, the design has increased the work capacity of turbines greatly, and subsequently solved the key problem of the lack of driving forces in matching turbine and pump. The engine performed perfectly in the previous first flight tasks of Long March 7 and Long March 6. It played an important role in boosting the breaking of 1000 tons of Long March 5 total thrust.
