This major consists of four specialized areas, which are Thermal Energy Engineering, Thermal Engines, Fluid Machinery and Engineering, and Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.

Thermal Energy Engineering: it is the discipline that studies the release, conversion, transmission, and rational utilization of thermal energy, which is widely used in various fields such as energy, power, space technology, chemical engineering, metallurgy, building and environmental protection. It aims at cultivating senior engineering technicians engaged in the researches, designs, operation management and product development of thermal energy engineering and engineering thermophysics. This major corresponds to the discipline of Thermal Engineering, which confers master's and doctoral degrees.

The major of Thermal Engines: it mainly involves the study of the designing, manufacturing, operation, fault monitoring and diagnosis as well as automatic control of high-speed rotary engines including steam turbines, gas turbines, turbojet and turbofan engines, compressors, and draught fans, with the purpose of training senior engineering technicians for sectors such as aviation, aerospace, energy, ships, petrochemical engineering, metallurgy, railway, and light industry. The Discipline of Power Machinery and Engineering that this major corresponds to can confer master's and doctoral degrees, and in 2000, it entered the list of national key disciplines.

The graduates of this major mainly work in the sectors of power generating equipment development, design and production, large power plants, the sectors of aviation and aerospace research and production, the sectors of marine engine research and production, as well as the sectors of system of power equipment development, production and operation.

The major of Fluid Machinery and Fluid Power Engineering: it mainly studies fluid machinery and its automatic operation and energy conservation in fluid circulation system, which have a wide range of applications in hydroelectric engineering, machinery manufacturing, communication and transportation, petrochemical engineering, engineering machinery, food and textile, aerospace and aviation, ship defense preparations, municipal facilities, civil engineering construction and other sectors. This major concerns the designing, operation and automation of fluid machinery and various fluid power systems and their automated management, control theory and engineering application. It offers training to senior engineering technical talents engaged in the researches, designing, manufacturing, operation, product development and scientific researches in such aspects as vane pumps, water turbines, draught fans, hydraulic and fluid drive and control, turbulence control, micro-scale channel flow, and viscoelastic non-Newton fluid mechanics. This major is corresponding to the discipline of Fluid Machinery and Engineering, which confers master’s degrees.

The major of Air Conditioning and Refrigeration: it is primarily centered on researches on refrigeration and cryogenic technologies. It widely contributes to such fields as energy, aerospace, aviation, automobiles, petrochemical engineering, food and drug production, medical equipment and the production of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. This major aims at cultivating senior engineering technical talents working on the designing, operation management, product development, and scientific researches related to air conditioning and refrigeration engineering and equipment. It corresponds to the discipline of Refrigeration and Cryogenic Engineering, which can confer master's and doctoral degrees.


2. The major of Flight Vehicle Propulsion Engineering

Flight vehicle propulsion systems are recognized as the heart of aircraft or spacecraft, as they are the most crucial part of the vehicles. The level of the development of aero-engines is iconic of the industrial development and competitiveness of a country.

This specialty mainly focuses on the theories and technologies of aviation and astronavigation propulsion to cultivate senior engineering technical talents engaged in the researches, designing, experiments, development and management of thermal power in aviation, aerospace, transportation, energy, environment and other related areas.

Multidisciplinary and technology-intensive, the major of Flight Vehicle Propulsion Engineering consists of four specialized areas: Engine Design and Engineering (covering Structural Integrity Analysis and CAD), Engine Flow and Combustion (covering Working Process Simulation), Engine Control and Testing Technology, and Engine Strength Vibration and Fault Diagnosis.

By virtue of systematic learning, the students will possess both solid basic knowledge of mathematics, physics, engineering mechanics and mechanical principles and expertise on aerodynamics, engineering thermodynamics, solid mechanics, automatic control, computer applications, and principles and structural strength of flight vehicle propulsion plants. The specialty primarily aims at training senior engineering technical talents for aviation, aerospace, marines and other industrial sectors. The Discipline of Power Machinery and Engineering that this specialty belongs to is a national key discipline and confers master’s and doctoral degrees. The graduates of this specialty are mainly engaged in the development, designing and manufacturing of aero-engines, aerospace engines, and marine gas turbines and the development and manufacturing of civil gas turbines.


3.Nuclear Reactor Engineering

Nuclear science and technology’s impact on human life and international politics has been increasing year by year and has been widely applied in the improvement with energy and resource uses, environment and human health. With the continuous development of China's nuclear technology and nuclear industry and the state’s increasing investment in nuclear technology, it is imperative that more high-quality nuclear science and technology talents should be hired by related institutions. The specialty aims to train advanced engineering and technical multi-ability talents equipped with science and engineering knowledge characterized by solid expertise on Nuclear Engineering Technology and Engineering Thermo-physics and supplementary understanding of Machinery, Electrotechnics and Computer Technology.

Through systematic study, students will possess solid basic knowledge of Mathematics, Physics, Engineering Mechanics, Machinery Principle, Electrotechnics and Electronics, specialized basic knowledge of Heat transfer, Fluid Mechanics, Engineering Thermodynamics, Automatic Control and Computer Application and specialized knowledge of Nuclear Reactor Physical Analysis, Nuclear Reactor Thermal Hydraulics, Nuclear Power System and Device, Nuclear Reactor Safety Analysis, Nuclear Reactor Design Principle, Nuclear Power Unit Testing Technique and Nuclear Power Unit Operation and Control.

The discipline of Power Engineering and Engineering Thermo-physics of the school is a national key primary discipline that offers doctoral degrees and also home to a post-doctoral station.
