School of Energy Faculty and Students Visit Universities in Singapore and Malaysia for Short-Term Academic Exchange under the "Outstanding Graduate Student International Exchange Program"

2026-08-19 10

To broaden graduate students' international academic horizons and enhance their capacity for research innovation, and with the support of the University Graduate School's Outstanding Graduate Student International Exchange Program, Associate Professor Zhang Yu of the School of Energy led seven doctoral students on a short-term academic visit to Singapore and Malaysia from August 3 to August 10, 2026. The delegation visited three public universities in Singapore—Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the National University of Singapore (NUS), and the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT)—as well as Taylor's University in Malaysia.

During the Singapore leg of the visit (August 3–6), the delegation engaged in a series of academic exchange activities. The faculty and students toured laboratories specializing in energy storage and new energy applications across the three Singaporean universities, observing advanced experimental platforms, research hardware facilities, and laboratory management and operational models. The visits provided an in-depth look at how Singaporean universities build research platforms, develop talent training systems, and pursue cutting-edge research in new energy technologies.

At the National University of Singapore, the delegation inspected two core research platforms: a novel ammonia-fueled gas turbine test bench system and a quad-generation adsorption refrigeration system. The team held in-depth discussions with NUS researchers on equipment operating principles, core technical parameters, system optimization strategies, and engineering application scenarios.

At the Singapore Institute of Technology, the delegation was invited to participate in the IEEE PES Technical Forum on Advanced Electrical Machines and Emerging Energy Storage Technologies. Team members delivered specialized academic presentations focusing on frontier research hotspots in novel energy storage. Following the presentations, Chinese and international attendees engaged in lively exchanges on research methodology optimization, breakthroughs in core technical bottlenecks, and the engineering translation of research outcomes, fostering a rich atmosphere of international academic collaboration.

After the forum, the delegation toured SIT's V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) Test Platform Laboratory, Energy Laboratory, and the MEMG Integrated Energy Visualization Management and Control Platform, gaining systematic insights into Singaporean universities' approaches to integrated energy system simulation, energy data visualization, and smart energy management.

During their stay, the delegation also visited Nanyang Technological University, where they held a thematic symposium with the Singapore Chapter of the Harbin Institute of Technology Alumni Association, establishing a regular channel of communication between the School's faculty and students and outstanding overseas alumni.

From August 7 to 10, the delegation traveled to Taylor's University in Malaysia for inter-university academic exchanges, with the goal of advancing collaborative research innovation and high-level talent cultivation in the energy field. The two sides held a dedicated symposium, introducing their respective disciplinary layouts, primary research directions, and distinctive graduate training systems. Discussions centered on shared frontier topics including new energy technologies, AI-empowered smart energy systems, and novel energy storage technologies, sparking new research ideas and exploring potential avenues for future cooperation.
